The roads around here vary from abysmal to awful! I'm wondering if I can fit a softer spring set to make the ride a little more acceptable, without spending a fortune.

Assuming the suspension is in good condition I would look at the tyres
It's a big car you don't want to soften the suspention

Prof wmf is right. I had 17 inch and swapped to 15 inch and it was different car.
I seem to have 15 inch wheels so it's not that.
Need to find a resolution before it shakes the sh*t out of me!
