Hi, the cambelt has snapped on my punto sporting 56 plate... someone said it might be the FIRE engine so that may mean it has not completely had it... any help would be great... can it be fixed easily is it time to get something else etc... etc...
It's FIRE 1.4 for sure but whether or not it's non-interference engine that's a mystery. Ask the garage. It's said that all 8-valve old type 1.4 were non-interference without vvt and the others definitely not.
You may still get away with a standard cambelt change. Have it checked by a professional. Ask around, prices vary.
If it si the single cam, it has fixed cam followers, (not automatic hydraulic ones). Remove the cam cover and check the valve clearances, bent valves will have large clearances. Not sure about the twin cam engine, but worth a look.
German example (1,4 8V with bent valves, because crankshaft timing belt pulley was damaged, broken "key" feature), no compression.

These are simple engines (8V or 16V non-turbo), easy and cheap (comparing to modern units, especially turbo-diesels) to repair.
