Im 17 and Insurance for my Fiat Seicento is way to expensive,Considering its a 1.1 and a group 3 car i am getting charged stupid money,All of these boy racers u see driving about has given driver's like me a bad name, and unfortuanatly im having to pay for it,Just because i am 17yr old dosn't mean i am a bad driver.
Is Insurance these days way to expensive or what!????

Course it is!
Im staying a named driver on my Mum's insurance until im old enough to get a cheap insurance policy of my own ;) (ssssshhhhh)

Been doing that for nearly 4 years now on my dads policy. I probably won't get my own insurance until I'm finished at uni and earning enough money to insure both the Punto and the Capri :D

Jsutton, sadly as a 17 year old just like I was, firstly there is the lack of driving experience which in a lot of cases can make a crash more likely, fair enough - there is significant evidence showing you are x times more likely to be involved in a RTA as a 17 year old than say a 45 year old. This isn't just attitude, as above, it's experience.

It's not just idiot 17 year olds, it's 17-21 year olds lacking driving experience and skill, possibly due to a fairly easy (IMO) driving test. - I know I passed with an awful drive after only 12 hours on the road.

In the 90s, insurance companies in general actually lost a serious amount of money hence the hike in premiums this decade. Hopefully it will calm down in a few years but until then, keep legal and be careful!

Well yeh i know on paper i am more likely to be involved in a crash than someone with a few years experiance,But a I've had a good few quotes of £4000 and above,Surly that cant be justified the car is hardly worth that much,It really amazes me when u see young boys driving about in Subaru Impreza's and Nissan Pulsars,There either payin an arm and a leg or there running around with no Insurance cover!?

i paid £1400 for a std cinq sporting with norwich union last year, 17 just passed test, now paying £1200 with 1 years no claims (but two other party fault accidents) and all mods declared, although without mods i'd have got insurance for about £850-900 but paying quite a bit more as i have quite a few mods  :D

i remember paying £1500 for my Volvo 340GL when I was 17. Bloody hell was that a crap car. Got given it.

I'm paying £800 Fully Comp now for my GT3 and I'm 23.

Personally I don't think driving experiance has anything to do with it... I've been driving for 4 years now, and in various cars covered over 70,000 miles and driven loads of cars (due to the job I used to do, and parents company cars etc...) and not had an accident until this year, 70,000 miles is 7yrs driving for the average person.

I have to say that I've never been quoted stupidly high insurance for the cars I've driven, but the first few years were over 700 quid which is enough.

My advice to getting the best quote is this: (i'm giving away my secrets)

1) get some quotes from any insurer, take the cheapest quote and take 10% off.

2) phone up an insurer who deals with young drivers and ask them to beat the quote you've come up with (i.e. the actual quote-10%)

3) take another 5% of that quote and phone up another insurer that you're likely to get a deal with and ask them to beat it. You should have a good quote by now, ask them to hold the quote for 7 days get them to promise to keep the quote at that price no matter what (this takes some blagging believe me)

4) in the week you've just bought your self phone a few other insurers, just to check you can't get anything better.

5)if you can't get anything else by blagging, begging, bartering, offering sexual favours (joke) etc...go back to your to the previous insurer, and get them to do another quote, just to check if its cheaper.... get them to promise again to give you the lower of the two.

Its best to do this very close to your renewlal date, because you'll be in a good position to buy there and then, and once they can smell the money they'll be very keen for your business, even more so if they think that you can get a better deal somewhere else...

Just remember you can push your luck too far, its a very fine balance between striking a deal, and getting told where to go.

I can say I've saved enough money from doing this, and will be making sure the insurance companies work very hard to give me a good quote again this year.

I've got the Uno 999cc FIRE and paying a stupid £1250 3rd party F&F - thats including the discount from doing the pass plus. But that was cheap by far as most wanted over £2000.

Unfortunately its just age - im 19 now and should have my insurance drop to £650 3rd party F&F in feb when its up for renewal - from Norwich Union Direct.

Also another tip - try buying it all online - most insurers can deal direct which means no piggy in the middle fee, and most offer a discount (10 to 20% of the policy)

luke, I have to say I disagree, if you ask most insurers will give you the online discount after a little haggling. In my experiance, its easier to haggle with a callcentre manager than a computer!

I agree with Alex, for young insures the only way I found to get a serious quote was to phone up and be polite, websites urr on the side of caution IME. I did possibly 15 online quotes which ranged from 1600 to 3k for a 999cc i.e. Uno start (m-reg, TPTF) inc. passplus (a lot of sites don't consider this).

I phoned up every insurance company in a huge list for 2 hours and got from 890 to 2k (the woman laughed too) - NU laughed at me when i said I had a quote of 890 from Churchill, I laughed as I put the phone down and phoned to take up the Churchill quote lol.

The internet method works for most but IME, not for young drivers.

True i see your points about the flaws on online purchasing. I'll have to give them a ring and see how it contrasts :)

As soon as you hit 21, insurance gets a lot cheaper. A couple of months ago before my 21st, I was getting quotes of £1000+ for the Punto and £1600 to £2000 for a Capri with the puny 1.6 engine. Now I'm 21, I've been quoted £650 fully comp for the Punto and £800 fully comp for my Capri 2.0. But I'm still insuring the Punto through my dad, as its just over £300, and the Capri is off road so no need for insurance yet.

Surely the fact of being in Switzerland keeps your insurance lower Alex ?
Can anyone tell me if its cheaper for young girls to insure their cars in the UK than it is for guys ?

Most definately i think - Plus women have their own dedicated insurers! My GF has no pass plus, own policy (i think) has a 1.6i Escort with multipoint fuel injection and pays the same as i do (1300) for my 999cc Uno 45 Fire. And im 19, shes 18. Least mine halfs in a couple of months!

Its just not fair :(
Still... When i eventually find a cheap half decent 3dr black uno i will be the one who's laughing :D

I agree completely, the balance of insurance costs are silly..

Surreally, when I declared all the mods to my car, my insurance nearly doubled
Went from £900 F/C to £1700 F/C on a 1242cc (was 1108cc) Cinq Sporting.

Id like to think I actually take more care of it with the more work I do to it, and strangely, insurers dont really view high performance brakes as a safety feature- and actually want to penalise me for putting them on...I really dont get it!

But why women pay less for insurance I'll never know...it (insurance generally) seems very discriminatory too me!!
