Hey Guys.

The lacquer coating on my red wing mirrors has peeled off and now the plastic / paint has gone a horrid whitish pink, totally eclipsing the shiny red paint work :) Anyone know the best way to sort this? Im not adverse to wipping out a can o' paint, but i want them to look shiny and new, not just red :) Ballsed up the white mirrors on my escort *ew!* good and proper with the help of some hammerite, so im ready to buy new mirrors if necessary too!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

You might be able to restore the colour with "T"-cut, or similar abrasive cleaner - assuming the paint is thick enough to stand it.

Then either respray with laquer (difficult), or keep applying a good non abrasive protective polish to try and keep the UV off the paint.

AIUI the paint looks the colour you see by absorbing some of the colours of the light which falls on it, and reflecting the rest.
Reds absorb all the blue and UV end of the spectrum, which oxidise the paint.
The laquer is meant to just keep the UV off.

*Astonished at your fantastical knowledge* [:0]

The coating has only peeled off about half way down one mirror, and is beginning to crack and bubble on'tother. Dont think the paint is thick enough, it's cracked and chipped down to the black in a few places. I'll give it a go tho, cant make it much worse! Could u recommend any polishes or coatings? Cheers!

I used plasticote products for mirrors & plastics etc, assuming u can match the colour.
I clean down the original paint/finish as far as possible, put 4 or five coats of acrylic (liquid not spray) on with a brush then a coat of liquid lacquer, couple more coats as required to match shade & hue then final lacquer, leave for a week (ish) then wash/polish/t-cut to get a good match. Far as I know this is only good for plastics etc. & being water based the paint is easily mixed to acquire a match, 99p for a little jar too so several pots dont break the bank.

Where do you find this plasticote stuff? It sounds great.

Any local craft/hobby shop should stock it or their own brand of liquid acrylic paints they usually come in small glass jars about 225 - 300ml.
Most of the shops may try to flog you the spray but I dont find it as versatile as the liquid on auto plastics. Its not a quick fix, takes a few coats and a bit of time but I like the results, way cheaper than normal auto paints too !

Cool! Can u take the wing-mirror off to do this? Dont wanna go poking around and snap the bugger off!!

take off the 3 screws inside and slide the interior cover over the handle, then pull the mirror out from the outside of the car.

If you get a match of the Rosso Red, do mention how you got it, mines nicely faded anyway!:)
