General Shunt!

Oh dear! Car drove into the back of the black 100hp today in (what looks like to be - I wasn't there) a slow-speed crash.

However, rear bumper will need fully replacing, it looks superficial initially. Anyone got any ideas of costs?... even though we won't be paying!!

It can be very deceiving this and what seem to be just bumper damage quite often means damage to the body underneath as well .. you wont get a full picture until its stripped out .. good luck

Much sympathy - hope it works out okay. I'd imagine you might need more than just a new bumper, as PNL said. When you get it fixed up, see if there's anything else you might want done at the bodyshop at the same time! When I needed a new rear bumper for my Punto Sporting they removed a couple of nasty scratches at the same time - freebie!

More sympathy from me too. Had someone do ours back in feb. rear bumber, wheel and quater panel all needed work. They seem to be quite hardy little cars though, hopefully should be just cosmetics from what you describe.

Open the boot and check for creases in the boot floor under the carpet e.t.c. Cars can look fine from the rear but have been bent underneath, my punto admittedly not as sturdy as a panda looked fine after a rear shunt but the boot floor had taken most of the beating and was creased so bad the sparewheel was jammed...

I've had a good look under the floorplan, where the real bumper is behind all that plastic and there's no evidence (to my untrained eye I might add) of real damage. Also looked under the carpets, spare wheel etc and there's no sign of strain or damage. Anyway I'll try and get a cursory look at it at the dealers repair centre tomorrow and see what they say.

One strange thing, if slightly breaking whilst turning, there's a slight noise from the rear brakes, bit like the slow braking when reversing that people talk about - might be unrelated, better get it checked too.

SOme idiot dived into the side of my Corsa two years ago I took the opportunity to get some cosmetic work carried out for free. I had curbed my hubcaps previous to the crash so I took them off and scraped them on the floor and knocked the badges off so they would replace them all. I also made sure the damage to my bumper was sufficient enough to warrant a new one instead of touching it up.

I will offer you a word of warning though: As people have said make sure the garage checks the mechanicals of the car.
My Corsa started to eat rear tyres - uneven wear. I took it to VAuxhall who inspected it and they told me the had been bent. The stupid company who fixed the car hadn't noticed and they refused to fix the car so I had to sell it in the end. They also had missed a big patch on the bumper that they hadn't painted and also put the wrong badges on the car!

Another tip: I damaged all of my hub caps to ensure I got replacements but the company provided the wrong hubcaps 3 times! I had to give them a picture of what they should have looked like before I got the correct ones - saying that I got to keep the last set they put on as spares.

Sounds like a nightmare Sammy.

Insurance companies like to send you to their authorised centres who I've heard put people through experiences like yours

I've insisted it goes to Fiat's as the car is less than 6 months old - they've accepted that. Used them before and they'll replace everthing knowing them. Will be sure to get them to check the basics like chasis etc!

This was with DirectLine (who incidentally are crap at paying out) and it was an approved repair specialist in DUdley - the thing that annoys me is the fact that they are only a cosmetic company they don't even deal with mechanicals!!! The reason I made sure my car looked worse (bent some panels and knocked some trim off) was to make sure it was written off. They didn't write it off or send it to a mechanics!!!

I hate that, I've actually seen people do it with no regard to the other person's valuable property. Should be made an enforced offence to make people think before they slam their door open in a car park!!!

That's exactly why I got the dealership to put side rubbing strips on mine before I picked it up! £120 including parts and labour but probably cheaper than having loadsa mini dents removed.

My boss had someone open their door (hard) into his car a while back, while he was sitting in the car. He got out and complained, and the driver said "So what, nobody died..."

er get back into your car....retaliate then reverse a little and do it again..rinse and repeat...then when the quite rightly ask you WTF your doing say so what nobody died....yet..

we had someone bang my dads focus with her door 3 times in tescos carpark and got a blank look when both me and my dad jumped out to confront her and she just shrugged and walked off..

Problem was (for her) it was a lovely sign written company car so out comes the mobile following a chat with the MD after threatening to go via insurance for the damage making it well clear that we had photos and she had damaged her car door about 5 min's later she come out of the store in tears makeup all down her face having got a fifty f##k's phone call from the MD..

Moral of the story a simple sorry goes a long way and driving a company vehicle that is sign written needs even more care



And as for these that bump you in car parks a Tow bar makes a wonderful bumper saver/ wrecker dependent on how you look at it
