severe weather warning.....

I watched that program on ITV1 earlier - "Tonight" with Mark Austin. He went over to Finland, Helsinki airport has never shut because of the snow, schools and businesses there never shut because of the snow and roads certainly don't close because of the snow!

If the Finnish can do it, why can't we? Despite not having enough resources, of course.

YES but every Finnish car has winter tyres and most people have block heaters too.

You are taking the **** arent you? Comparing us to Finland after 3 weeks of snow and cold joker. They have it basically all year round, id be a bit worried if they werent better prepared for it and didnt have the infrastructure in place to cope with bad weather.

ITV was doing the comparison, not me. I'm not saying we should be more like the Finnish but in February 2009, when we had 7 -10 inches of snow, the Government didn't prepare and by now you'd of thought they'd of learnt their lesson, but it would seem not.

I'm not saying: "Lets follow in their footsteps", but here, very little preperation is put into place for when there is snowfall.

Don't you agree that the fact we do get heavy snow brings the entire country to a standstill - very few people are able to commute; - Businesses and schools suffer, because airports, roads and railways close down, people have to stay at home and nurses are unable to get to see patients in their homes because the roads are physically inaccessible?
Would all this happen if more preperation had gone into place? Who knows?

Oh and for those of you who want to watch the "Tonight" Program as presented by Mark Austin, you can see it on ITV Player: http://www.itv.com/itvplayer/video/?Filter=116825

and where does the money come from?
right now locally we are having services cut across the board
you cant just stockpile grit/ploughs/staff etc on the off chance
unless central government releases the funding then it cant come out of thin air
much of the 'chaos' was down to folk just not trying to get into work

Yeah it does, but thats because the country very rarely gets the levels of snowfall we had in feb 09 and this month. If the governments and councils over bought just in case and then we had no snow the the whole country would be moaning about them wasting money. If you are tht pissed off invest in your own set of winter tyres and that will solve your problem. Personally blaming the government is weak, if we had winters like this every year for the past 10 years then it would be justified but we dont. We got caught out, live with it. The only reason very few people are able to commute is because they are looking for the perfect excuse not to go into work that is it. Main roads have been clear for the most part of it just people look at their street and decide not to go out.

I understand the concerns you have. But what happens when the country does run out of supplies? We can order more, but that's going to cost more money in the long run because there will be more of an urgency for it.

Sorry folks, I was just stating my opinion. Didn't mean to start a huge debate, lol.

Same applies the other way. What happens if they order double, triple what they have and its not needed? You will then moan when your council says they have no money because they have bought extra grit.

I emailed my Council about this and they had a common sense approach. They were going to stockpile enough to get us by while they get additional supplies of the stuff brought in.

I think this sort of weather is here to stay and will happen year by year (maybe not as harsh).

I'm going to get another set of wheels for winter and put SnowSports on them as there great in the wet etc too.

And miss out on all the fun :p

More snow this week apparently!

No I'm annoyed that my tax pay them to do this. Not only that I may have to LOOSE money to take a day off when my child should be at school.

And don't play the "health and safety" card there's plenty of schools that didn't shut even with 10inches outside.

Today I found possibly the only road in Britain to still have ice on it :bang: Was my own fault for trying to look for a free parking space (which I found :D).

After coming across the ice, did you have much of a car left to put in the parking space? :p
