I'm looking into getting Tom Tom 6 set up on my N73 and have noticed you can get 32 channel gps receivers that can pick up satellites from indoors.

I'm wondering, would it be able to work from underneath the dashboard? If so, any recommendations as to which unit?

My thinking is placing a receiver under the dash out of sight and hard wiring the power to it.

In addition, can anyone point me in a good direction to get hold of Tom Tom 6 (symbian version) legally or otherwise? I've seen retail costs, just wondering if anyone spotted anywhere else cheaper?

Sorry for all the questions, but I know some of you here have some symbian Tom Tom experience. I used to have TT5 on my Nokia 6600 and that served me well, so I'm looking to achieve that useability whilst hiding the equipment.

Placeing a 32 channel GPS under a dash may work but probally wont be as effective.

Why not get a solar power bluetooth gps off ebay. They work really well sat on your rear parcel shelf.

Or your could wait a a few months and get the Nokia 95 of Nokia 6110 Navigator which will have GPS built in.

i've got the n95 on order at moment. T-mobile have confirmed stock and now ready to ship within next 7 days.cant use tom tom though. and you have to pay for voice navigation and actual directions to your direction!!!

sorry to take off topic...lol :)

Leaving a solar powered one on display is not really ideal as I want to position the unit and then forget about it. A solar powered one by a window would involve removing it everytime I've finished driving.

Insy, why not try locating it up where the light is, that way you have power, its pretty much out of sight and will have good signal strength?

the lights going to have a permenant supply and switched so the leccy side of it is sorted, its then just locating it, as idont know the size of the unit i wouldnt even dare hazard a guess, but if you did it right it could look almost oem...

ps appoloigies if spellings a bit off, im a touch tired and cant even tell lol :)

I used to keep my 16 channel GPS receiver in the sunglasses compartment in the roof of my Mondeo and it always got a good signal. The glove box might be pushing it however. Have you thought about somewhere in the boot ?

As has already been stated, the N95 does have built in GPS, but TomTom can't use it yet. I'm sure an update will come though. Nokia's own Maps application is free, but you have to subscribe to the turn by turn instructions. There are also other apps like aMaze and Nav4All.

BTW, the N73 is a top phone, especially the Music Edition :)

re

sorry just read symbian version, xda mini is windows mobile

dunno if its any good to you still

I had been looking into this a while back and its very possible. The best place to fit the device is either under the parcel shelf with velcro or under the melon holder in the front of the car. My 16 Sat gps device works in the glovebox aswell.

Check out the "qstarz" gps devices. They can automatically come on with just the presence of a bluetooth connection and/or via a 12V supply. This would make fitting it easy into the car and work off the ignition and feel OEM. I was going to fit it near the passenger side airbag under the cover and hard wire it into the cig lighter.

I've had 16 sat and 32 sat devices and found the 32 sat to find a satellite much faster from cold but it is more power hungry. Overal i've never lost signal with a 16sat gps device and wouldn't swap it for a 32 sat again as it seems to last forever on one charge. I have the BT77 Version 2 just incase your wondering. Old but effective.

Word of warning Insy, if Ash's GPS receiver crashes then avoid it like the plague. Like mentioned my BT77 never crashed ever in the whole two years i've had it.

If you get a qstarz they are just as reliable, to turn them off either deactivate bluetooth or turn the ignition off, depending on method chosen to wire it in.

I bought a Holox BT-321 32 channel gps reciever with car charger, brand new in box off ebay for £30 delivered and its great, absolutley fantastic. I keep it at the very front of my centre concole, so its accessible to turn on/off but hidden from view

Use it with tomtom6 on nokia n73, brill!:)

yes they can, but not with the intergrated gps, you would need a seperate gps device!! :)

umm unless u know something 20,000 members dont? also a beta tester whom has phone confirmed that the gps unit is not compatible with tom tom. ?

where did you get your information from.. i can post plenty of links to confirm what i know...prove it :)

Ade

dont take it wrong way, but if you know something then share it :)

The official deal on using 3rd party GPS softare with regards to the N95's internal GPS is that the hardware is available to the 3rd party software, hoewever it seems that none of the major navigation programs are set up to look for anything other than a bluetooth or wired GPS- nothing internal. So they need to update the software. Good news is that this will happen sometime. The N95 is anticipated by the mobile community, like nothing before... so I assume at least TomTom would get on it soon. We can hope.

TomTom has not been developed to use the internal gps yet..so we have to wait for update
