General Seicento block and oil pump

Hi guys, I have a question. My seicento has an oil leak somewhere.
I took the oil sump off to remake the gasket and found this. On the other side of the U shape its even more broken, but I don't have a photo.

I tried to stop it from leaking and failed. I used alot of liquid gasket, and for a while it worked. But then it started again.
So I took it to a mecanic that told me that de problem was that the block was cracked. But he told me that he probably wasn't going to look at it because since the leak came from the oil pump it was an area that was under alot of pressure. So basicaly, it didn't had a fix. I would spend alot of money. It would be easier to put a second hand engine in.
But he didnt't took the sump out...
My question is

Is the lighter color metal piece the oil pump? And if I change it, it won't leak? Is it to hard of a job?

Any help is apreciated. And sorry for my english. It might not be the best.

Yes. The part that has the pickup that goes into the bottom of the sump is the oil pump. If you take the sump off and the lower crank pulley you can take the oil pump off and replace. They are quite expensive to buy new.

How did it get so damaged in the first place?

The broken bit isn't a problem as such from what i can see other than it giving you a leak. If the engine is generally good I would personally try and repair. Do you have any pictures of where the broken sections are in respect to the sump when it is in position?

I don't know how it got damaged. But on the other side is way worse that the one that I have the foto. The missing chunk is way bigger.
I was told that they could have broken it by using a pry bar tring to get the sump off. Because the sump had been removed previusly, from the other owners of the car.

The red circle is a piece of metal from the oil pump. and the lines is ruflly the place where the missing chunks of metal are.
I can get a new oil pump for about 130 euros. But I think that it is going to be cheaper than buying a new engine

I agree. Probably was someone being a bit of an animal trying to get the sump off

If it is alot worse the other side then it probably not worth repairing. 130 euros isn't too bad for an oil pump, but replacement engines can be got in the uk for about the same price, or less if your lucky.
It may be worth checking around ebay or similar to see what you can find first.
