I have a Seicento 0.9 sx it developed a squeak a few days ago, then last night it died while my girlfriend was driving, looking under the bonnet reviles that a toothed belt has snapped, can i just replace the belt and go, or is it a case of it will have damaged other components?
The belt is the one to the left of the engine block that runs off the engine to the alternator. if some one could help with advice that would be awesome.

It's not a serpentine belt, just a standard drive belt. Buy a decent quality one as I have found cheap ones tend to squeal a bit. One I have on now is a Goodyear (I think), can't remember where it came from though sorry. Shouldn't cost more than around £6.00 or so.

You need to go under the drivers side wheelarch and remove the rainguards. You have to remove the crank sensor to get the belt on. Give the alternator pulley a go over with some sandpaper to prevent slipping. There are two bolts on the alternator, loosen both then slip the belt over the pulley. Get someone to pull as hard as they can on the alternator whilst you tighten up the lower adjusting nut, then tighten up the top nut and give it a test (out of gear!) before putting everything back together. Not hard but fiddly.

Gates belts on ebay are about £6.50.

Thankyou, taken battery out, and charged over night, going to retrieve the car tonight, hopefully a full charge will get us home.

should i take the power steering fuse out to get it home?

If it's got electric power steering, it will be very heavy and very difficult to drive without. Taking the fuse out may make it impossible to drive. Try it, when the traffic is quiet, but be prepared to put it back in.

Are you a member of any breakdown organisation? Meet them at the car with a new belt and they'll fit it and the battery.

Thank you all you lovely people!!!

got it home, was only a few miles, it's a freezing cold night. it didn't overheat. will get the belt changed in the morning. will defo buy a fiat forum bumper sticker and display it for all to see!
