Hello,

My 2nd gear has gone on holiday. The gear stick seems to go into the right slot but nothing engages.

1, 3, 4, R seem OK (although 1st pops out sometimes).

I think this happened while driving - at least I first noticed when I tried to put it in second when I started to go down a big hill. It was only after this that 1st started popping out occasionally too. The gearstick seems to be at a slightly different angle to normal, but maybe I am just imagining that!

I am hoping that I just need to adjust the linkage / selector but any thoughts would be most welcome!

I had exactly the same happen to me on a 2 1/2 year old 126 Bis which had a similar gearbox to the 500. I had no warranty on the car and it was about 30 years ago in the days before I had rebuilt any gearboxes so I just kept on driving it until I could trade the car in. The gearbox systematically destroyed itself to the point that I could only get reverse. Did not stop me trading the car in after I reversed the car about a mile and parked it up at a Peugeot dealership then drove my brand new 106 home. Hopefully you can sort it by adjustment, the gear lever should be vertical when in neutral but like my 126 it is unusual to loose only one gear.

Thanks Toshi 975! (And well remembered for an experience 30 years ago!). Sounds like bad news, if I have the same problem. I managed one 25 mile then one 55 mile trip with just 1, 3, 4. I now think I might have been quite lucky.

I am not getting any bad noises at all though.

On the side of the centre consol, on the off-side and level with the gear lever are to 13mm heads for 2 bolts. These are the adjustment for your gear selection. If you slacken off the 2 bolts you can adjust your gear selection---you tap them forward to affect 1st and 3rd selsection, and tap them back to affect 2nd, 4th and reverse gears. Before you do that, check that the 'lollipop' that connects the rof from your gear lever to the selector-shft coming out of the rear of your gearbox is in good condition and the 2 'stepped' bolts are not loose.
When you have done any adjustment required, tighten up the 2 bolts.
