Hello All,

Any help or advice would be very welcome.

I have wiper problems on my 2008 Mk2 Scudo. The wiper motor runs making a knocking noise and "nudging" the wipers when switched off (even with the car locked) , intermittent wipe is very intermittent. Occasionally it works mostly it doesn't. The fast speed now isn't very fast .

I have tried searching this excellent site and several others but have found conflicting advice about likely causes.

Based on my very limited knowledge I am guessing there are 4 possibilities

1) Based on other cars I've owned before I guessed it might be a faulty relay. However I cant find a likely suspect in either fuse box. In fact I can only find 2 relays in the engine bay, a blue 4 pin one in the fuse box which doesn't appear to be related to the wipers and a black one on the RHS of the engine bay which I think is for the glow plugs. I looked at the diagram of the wiper system someone kindly posted and didnt see a relay on it. It did mention a control unit above the windscreen but mine doesn't have this. I checked. It is a basic Panorama version without auto wipers. When I disconnect the wiper motor (plug under the bonnet) I cant hear a relay clicking anywhere.

2) A faulty wiper motor. Could the control functions of a relay in older cars be built in to the wiper motor?

3) A faulty main fuse board. I had a Fiat Ulysse previously that needed a new board but unlike that car I cant see any corrosion on this one. I took out all of the big fuses and cleaned them, They all had light oxidation on one terminal. The small fuses are all clean. Is it just a fuse board or does it incorporate functions previously done by relays? The boards are a bit expensive, even used, so I don't want to get one unless its highly likely to be the cause.

4) The stalk. It feels fine but could it have developed a problem?

While I love the space, visibility and practicality of the Scudo am I alone in thinking that making it easy to do basic tasks like changing headlight bulbs did not get much attention from the designers....
Thanks for any advice....

The wiper is working intermitently, so you can rule out fuses, relays and the motor itself.

You're left with a wiring problem, a lot of Fiats have wiring problems. Its hard to say where that problem is without a lot more info/pictures.

Anthony H Thanks for your message . Why would the intermittent wipe working intermittently rule out the motor or a a relay? I can understand how it would rule out a fuse which is either blown or not blown . I couldn't see any obvious damage to the wiring Do you have any idea if there is a relay and if so where? Many thanks.

first thing to do is to lubricate the spindles where the wiper connects. Lift the wipers off the screen and clear all the muck away from around the spindles. spray some wd 40 or similar onto the spindle where it goes through the bulk head and let it soak in. with the wipers still off the screen turn the wipers on full and keep giving a squirt of wd 40 onto the spindles, you will see what I mean when you look at it. the wiper spindles will be moving and it need lubricating right where they sit in the bearing. keep doing it till the wipers start to speed up a bit and then switch off and drip some light oil onto them and let that soak in. I had the same problem (apart from the knocking) and that cured it, it keeps moving after its switched off because the wipers cannot park themselves properly so keep trying to park. Open the bonnet and give all the joints of the wiper mechanism a good spray with spray grease then keep working them until they are back to normal. It took a few goes with me but I didnt lubricate with oil after the wd 40 so I think it may have just dried out again.
lift the plastic trim round the wipes from time to time and clean it out, what happens is muck build up around them and then water gets into the spindle and causes it to start seizing up.

All thanks for advice. In the end it turned out to be the wiper motor. I got a cheap (£40) new one on ebay which seemed identical to the original. There were excellent instructions on how to remove and replace it on this site. It took a complete incompetent like me about 2 1/2hours.

First I tried changing the engine bay fuebox, which is a bit more than a fusebox. There are various electronics sandwiched in the middle of it. I spent ages loooking for a Scudo one. The only 100% numbers matching one was £175 secondhand. As I was not sure if this was the problem I was reluctant to pay that much, so I did what you are not supposed to do and used one which looked the same, but had a different part number. It worked fine. It appears that many PSA group fuseboards with different part numbers are compatible with a basic Scudo. Ebay's compatibilty checker said it was ok and it was right. I used one from a Pug 3008 1.6hdi and it seemed to work fine (second hand ebay £40).

Hope this helps
