Hi, we've just got back from 4 days in Torquay. It was very nice, thankyou. Now, after going down there at a fairly constant 60 mph along the M62/M6/M5 my temp gauge needle was up in unchartered territory, 90+!!! It very rarely gets past the 55 mark usually. This went up to the 100ish mark in slow or standing traffic!!! I was starting to get a bit worried and spent many a traffic que roasting my nads off with the heater on full belt! One day we got back to the camp car park and I left it running to see just when the rad fan would kick in. This happened around the 105? mark. When we got home I checked the Haynes Manual and the fan should start at 85ish-90 if I remember correctly, so, is there anything amiss or am I worrying unduly?
When I got the car it didn't have a temp gauge in it just a little red light in the bottom right hand corner (stupid idea I reckon), so I got a clock pod from another Cinq' in the scrappy and fitted it. So, any help/ideas are greatfully recieved.(y)
*EDIT*
After reading another thread about the temp light getting brighter (like mine did) it reminded me that when I got the car the sensor was broken/snapped where the spade connector is. It was, I think, originally a dark green colour but the one that the Fiat dealer gave me was black and a bit longer too, so I'm hoping I have the right sender unit. Sorry for being so thick but I was brought up on old Fords and I also play with old VW's so these little Italian fun buggies are still a learning curve for me.

So it didn't actually boil then?

I would be checking the values of the temp sender.

I would be a bit worried about it running so cool the rest of the time, the thermostat shouldn't open till way above 55.

Is your thermostat ok and the system fully bled?

Cheers

No, it didn't boil and once we got moving again the needle would drop below the 90 mark. I've never driven it that far before so it's never really had time to get very hot but as soon as I got into standing traffic it would be getting up around the 100 mark, so on went the heater! I must have lost about 3 stone in the last 4 days. haha When I first swapped the clocks over I thought the temp gauge was broken as it didn't appear to move at all, then we had a day out in the Pennines and it came up past the 50 mark, then at the next glance it was back down to nothing again!
I'll see if the original doner car is still in the scrappy and try and get the sensor and hope for the best.(y)

Here's a blast from the past!
To answer Kestrel, in the last couple of years it developed a badly leaking water pump, so I ditched it for a brand new one, the rad had a slight weep where the sender screws in and now I suspect that during the last cold spell a gritter may have punctured the rad 'cos I have to top the exspansion tank up every 2 or 3 days. I've gotten used to the gauge now so no worries there anymore.(y)
ps: Sorry for the delay in getting back but I'd forgotten about this thread.;)
pps: It's still got the same thermostat as well.

my cars running temp is around 50 on a really cold day with the heaters on full blast to 100 on a hot day stuck in traffic. the cooling system on these cars are all over the place. i replaced the thermostat thinking it was to fault when the new was was the same.
in winter the heater matrix is enough to keep the 899 engine cool LoL
