RIP poor chap. Was talking about this at work today and weighing things up, loosing your sight must something very hard to take on if you've had sight previously. I don't think I'd be able to cope personally. Yes suicide is generally an inconsiderate act but when you consider what the chap has been through. He was a normal person like you or I 2 years ago. It's his family I feel for now though, hopefully he's at peace now though.

He also assaulted his wife. Sounds like a typical copper to me, and setting up a foundation for injured cops doesn't change that.

Oh really? I know a few ex-coppers that received very healthy pay outs for what were relatively minor injuries.

Course he was innocent, there's no debating that. I feel really sorry for the entire story, but I'm just struggling to see how anyone can find this inspirational.

Yes they get financial support but what about emotional support? Which was what he needed obviously. He lost his sight, his job, his house and his family yeah sure thousands of pounds in pay out is gonna help you sort that out in your own head.

No, he didn't lose his family, he drove them away. To put this in to perspective, he'd had a good run, two grown up kids, a wife, decent job, decent pension. It's not like he lost his eye sight young.

So he set up a foundation for injured coppers, well, what about setting up a foundation for those less forunate that suffer criminal injuries? There's naff all help for them, wish they got mega payouts and healthy pensions.

What about our lads who lose all their limbs or suffer severe spinal injuries? They've got help for heroes and a few others but nothing that comes anywhere near to covering what they go through.

Nothing inspirational here. Nothing at all.

No it was the dispatch centre's incompatance leading to him being in the wrong place. Hence the independant inquiry into the handling of the whole situation.

They won't get the chance now, but it seems unlikely to be arrested for assaulting your wife without actually assaulting your wife. He'd probably have the case 'disappear' though.

Happens all the time. Usually after an argument. Women know the Police will 'sway' towards the womans story and will often arrest them to 'diffuse' the situation.

He could have regrouped suited up in riot gear with the armed police that where on the way but where on the other side of the county!.

What could he have done with intel? He wasn't armed or anything. It wasn't personal, it could have been any copper.

With intel he and other officers would have been aware of the situation and on the look out for him, and as a result he probably wouldn't have got close enough to shoot him in the face.

Either way he was a serving officer who got maimed doing his job for what most people would consider an average salary - deserves a little respect. I'd doubt anyone of us would react differently in the same situation, Not much risk of getting shot in the face working in IT.
