I must admit that at 80mph I get a better mpg than I do at 70mph however I have noticed that at around 65-68mph I get around 55mpg on the motorway.
 
Engine efficiency is only half the story but do remember that a 16V engine works more efficiently at higher gas speeds, where an 8V works more efficiently at lower gas speeds.

Inlet air temperature also changes the fuel economy and generally in the northern hemisphere we are seeing increasing temps, then economy should get better.

Add aerodynamic drag which squares with velocity and mechanical drag and it becomes very complicated.
