I'm finding that the gears crunch going into reverse, unless I have the clutch pushed right to the floor and I put the gear in slowly. Seems fine going into forward gears.

I know the owner before me had a new clutch fitted not long before he sold it to me

Is there an obvious fix? Is the clutch adjustable?

My son's Seicento does the same. I have adjusted the cable and it still does it. If I get reverse correct them 5th gear won't go in properly. If it crunches really bad try to adjust the cable on the gearbox and get a happy medium.

I seem to remember that you are correct.

so would a reverse on any other car usually have sychromesh?

I find if I do it very slowly, and "feel" it in I avoid a crunch, but if I just whack it into reverse like I would on a normal car a crunch is inevitable

Many older cars need to be put into first before putting into reverse to avoid graunching .Try it!
