I've just bought a set of silver Punto GT alloys to fit to my car, but I want to respray them in the dark grey/anthracite colour like the later-model GT wheels (as in my sig pic, on the right). Anyone know how to do this? Is it just a case of sanding the original lacquer down and spraying with regular car paint? Or do you need specific wheel paint? And do you need a special tough lacquer for wheels, or will ordinary car lacquer do the trick?

i would think its really a job for the pro's,powder coating maybe.just dont think the paint would have a good enough hold and would flake.think of the force of the water when you hit a puddle at 60Mph but maybe someones done it before and has a working method

i agree with custard - i know someone who painted their alloys and it didn't take long for them to flake, if you a top job then it is best to shell out the money for it and get a professional to do it and then you have some kind of warranty/guarantee.

I'll try to get a few quotes but I don't want to spend that much! ;) Already spent £100 on wheels and new tyres will probably cost £120 [xx(]

Just had a word with a mate who does loads of work on cars, he reckons I'll be able to do it, just need to do a lot of prep work on the wheels before spraying, then high-build primer and normal car paint will be fine. :D[8D]

it needs lots of clear laquer, pax mower did a "the worx" diy guide to sorting out your existing alloys using chemical metal and stuff.

preperation is 95% of the job and yes you can spray paint them, proper car paint is the best with lacquar plenty of under coat to fill things cough cough

Cheers for the info guys, this is what I've gathered so far from various mates and the 'net:

Sand the original lacquer down; smooth out any dents using filler; degrease; apply 4 coats of high-build primer; smooth with wet & dry paper; degrease again; apply 4-5 coats of car paint; leave in warm place for min. 48 hours to cure; apply 4 or 5 coats of lacquer; leave in warm place for a week to cure.

That sound about right? :)

You should be able to find somewhere that will do it properly for less than £100.

I had mine redone for £80.

Weigh up the amount of work you need to do, and the cost of the paint, laquer, undercoat, etc. You're probably talking lots of hours work and a hefty bill for the paint etc.

Filling any dents etc with filler is not recommended. Subject to the high pressures particularly around the rim will make a very high risk of a blowout. I had a blowout on a 5-series BMW at 60mph which was very very scary and damaged the bodywork to the tune of £1500 (BMW garage prices though). I would do everything in my power to prevent a blowout on a small car like a punto.

TBH I'd just get them done properly - it's not worth the risk.

i did a set of 14's myself, started out life silver and ended up black, you have to watch about the wheel nuts, metal hitting metal tends to cause some distinct flakyness. other than that you should be fine.

FINALLY got started on the wheel respray! I've stripped the lacquer with wet & dry paper, filled in the few small dents with an industrial "plastic steel" compound (infinitely stronger than ordinary filler and so it should be at £100 a tub; didn't pay for it mind, my dad swiped it from where he used to work ;)) and sprayed a couple of coats of primer on.

So far so good: primer's got a nice smooth finish on it, dents are almost invisible after just 2 coats (going to do 5 in total then rub down with wet & dry) and I haven't died from the paint fumes yet [xx(] - next job is to hunt down the exact shade of dark metallic grey that I'm after!

Incidentally, if anyone else is about to do any kind of spraying, Motor World are doing 600ml tins of grey primer for £2.99 rather than £4.99 :D

If you put your wheel bolts in their holes before spraying then the paint won't flake and the bolts will seat correctly.
