Okay my punto has had £250 spent on it now with new sensors, plugs leads etc etc and still has starting problems and is juddering under harsh acceleration (in any gear).

Rather than buying a new ECU can it be reset by disconnecting the battery?

Usually all you need to do is disconnect the battery for a decent amount of time (an hour or two should be more than plenty). Just make sure that you've got the code for the radio!

What have you replaced so far?

it is an eprom so will only remove error codes saved less than 3 times, anything more and it will still do the same thing (ie if your airbag goes off, disconnecting the battery and fitting a new airbag and the light on the dash will stay on).

You sound like you have the common clutch judder problem as a result of a warping flywheel. if your car is under warrenty book it in, if not talk to fiat about it being a recall on your model...

no its not the clutch, its a new one, check my other thread entitled "Just bought my first punto" for all the problems I have and what work has been done so far.

that resets it yes leave it disconected for about half hour, it will then run strange for a while some say as much as 250 miles until ecu has readjusted its self.

What do you mean by run strange Dave?

it will not respond as quick an may judder a bit (but you be used to that) the ecu has to take new readings off all the sensors then it works out how best to run the engine.

that other guy didnt say new cluth he said warped flywheel you dont get a new one of them with a new clutch, but i think that was only a problem with mk2s.

ah ok

Is it true I should drive it hard for a few minutes to get it working again?

Yes, I did. Very difficult to know if it makes any difference, it may just be all in your mind, but I left mine off all night, then thrashed it all the way to work.

Ok thanks for all the replies and help you have all given me on all my threads!

I have now disconnected the battery and will wait and see if this works.

While I have to say I don't think restricting it to Fiat owners is a good idea (thus alienating prospective Fiat owners!), I think a banning of this person is appropriate since he's made 7 posts, non constructive, all irrelevant and all containing foul language.

There's a thread now in the Leisure lounge about it. Yes they can ban people but more likely (based on experience anyway) they'll just delete his posts. Unlikely he'll be back anyway I guess (I hope!)

Hi fiat guru here,
you cant reset a e.c.u by disconnecting the battery, it has to be done by an examiner the dealership have and then you have to warm up the car and reset the phonic wheel. depending on the year of your punto there is a recall 4679 where the e.c.u is reset. but disconnecting the battery will not help! any questions please PM us
