I don't know how to do it, but wanted to ask if you're sure it's necessary. I was going to but worked out I don't need to.

I downloaded a GPS app on my phone to see how accurate the speedo was. This is what I found:

Displayed km/h - GPS MPH

50 - 28
RH edge of the 1st gear shift symbol - 30
70 - 40
90 - 52

So I just use 50, 70 and 90 km/h to mean 30, 40 and 50 MPH. I don't often go over 50 MPH and if I do, I'm not looking at the speedo.

Yes, Thanks I saw that, but the tripometer will still record in Km
Years ago, I found a company that made tiny gearboxes for speedo cables. They were for cars that had gearbox transplants or big wheels fitted. They could do almost any ratio. In theory, you could do that. Reduce the cable speed by 1.609344 to change from km to miles. I know mine reads way under, so 1.666 would suit my car better. The problem is that your odometer would then read high. Mine has 80,000km on the clock, which is 50,000 miles. I wouldn't want to convert mine without winding 30,000 off the display.

Valid thoughts on why you shouldn't need to swap it aside...

The speedo is simply mounted on metal clips. If you look at the back of the speedo from under the bonnet, you can remove the lock nut holding the speed cable in place, and pull out the warning light bulbs (noting which goes where!) and then if you push the metal clips in, circled in the attached picture, the speedo will just pop out into the car.
