Hi,

I have a Punto mk2a that came with a cassette stereo radio.
Recently the radio died, and before the died the display was going blank for years.
I was thinking about replacing the radio for the OEM Blaupunkt CD version.
Is this doable? I think the radio is matched to the body ECU via the CAN? So if I get one from a scrap yeard it might not work?

The radios that came out with a CD reader were for the MK2b version, I think. While they fit in the MK2a version of Punto, are the wire harness the same?

I don't like the aftermarket look of radios and ideally I want to keep the OEM look. If possibly with a CD reader, if I can burn a CD to play my favorite tunes I would be happy enough.
It sucks not having a car radio, I liked it better when my car had sound.

Model
Punto Mk2a 1.2 16V

2002
The mk2a radios had pins for both 12v permanent feed and 12v switched. The mk2b had radios that had only 12v permanent and a canbus connection control to enable switch on when ignition on. I've just replaced mine (mk2b) with aftermarket and wired in a switched live. I will test my old canbus controlled radio with this new wiring (canbus wires are cut) and see if it works.

The mk2a doesn't have a 12v switched from the ignition switch. It connects to the CAN to know if the ignition is on or off.
I believe the CAN also offers some form of pairing, that replaces the typical code that radios from this age had to prevent theft, but I don't know this for sure.
If you could test your it would be really appreciated.

Edit: I was looking at the wire diagram. It might have a 12 V switched wire from the ignition.
It definitely has CAN connected to it. but there is also a 12 V wire that I need to check it is is connected to the ignition or not. This wire comes from a 7.5 A fuse that also seems to be part of the instrument cluster and the electronic mirrors control.

Had a check as promised, with the connector re-configured as per iso standard. The stereo turns on manually but gives a cancheck warning as I have cut those wires to us the pins elsewhere. It's been a long time since I had a mk2a but I do remember moving a wire to make it work but I think that was the permanent wire. Looking at the wiring connectors the mk2a has it's can connections on the smaller connector, the mk2b has them in the iso connector pins 1&3. The mk2b has a permanent feed on pin 4 the mk2a doesn't, the mk2a has has a switched live on pin 7 the mk2b doesn't. The can connections let the multi timer unit pair with the stereo allowing removal and fitment without having to input a code. If the radio is moved to another car the cancheck will prompt for a code which will then re-pair the radio to the new unit.

If fiat didn't change the can protocol between the mk2a and mk2b then I think you could fit a later OEM cd player but you would have to repin the connector to match the later std but it is a risk that it won't work.

Going aftermarket is a guaranteed way to make it work. Some aftermarket stereos don't look flashy and look very boring and OEM.

Edit. Actually the mk2a pinout shown doesn't show a canbus it is the CD CHANGER bus. What connections are shown on your stereo. Post a pic of the label. I have heard some later mk2a's adopted the mk2b wiring scheme.
