Hi guys, hope you can help me....

I have received today a replacement linkage and a replacement motor for my front wipers on my MK1 punto. I bought these as the wipers make an horrendous noise when switch them on. I had a test run the other day to see
how to remove the 'grill' in front of the linkage and motor but obviously you can not remove this grill without removal of both wipers. I took the plastic caps off and removed the bolts but am unsure as to how to actually remove the wipers. If someone could advise further it would greatly appreciated :)

get a screw drtiver underneath them and prise them up .. there is no other stoppages but theyre just a bit stiff .. i shouldn't think they've been removed in there lifetime so naturally they will be..

Thanks for that, will have a go when I get home (as long as it doesnt rain) and report back.

Its easy and really simple its two 13mm bolts just undo them and pull the wipers off then undo the screws thats holding the plastic down with a possy drive then jobs a good en.

Only reason i come to do mine now was because i read this thread and though ahh yeah i gotta remove mine to clean all the crap out..leafs etc.. when i took mine off it was really cluttered with leafs and some how mud..I suppose the other car owners didn't care for the car as much.

Quick update guys -

I managed to get the wipers off, changed the motor and all is well...... except now I cant re-position them in the positions they were originally in. No matter what position I put them they default about a third of the way up the windscreen. I think that when I have screwed the motor and the linkage together maybe the motor was not in the 'rest' position so I am going to have another go at it tonight. Has anyone else got any suggestions?

Cheers
Marc

I take it the linkage and motor/gearbox were supplied separately, and you had to assemble them? Odds are the crank is misaligned.
Strip back down (valance panel off, wipers off). Run the wipers a couple of times, just to be sure it should have rest to position. Now remove the assembly.
On the gearbox output you will see a short crank (the fat metal arm that goes around, making the rest of the linkage move). In the static/rest condition, this should be pointed straight at the furthest wiper spindle - it's sort of like top dead centre on the engine.

You should be able to reset it without removing the entire linkage assembly from the motor. When you've set it, refit the motor/linkage assembly, wire up. But before you put it all back together, pop the wipers back on (fingertight the nuts), and try the wipers. They should now come to rest correctly - if not, tweak it and try again. Saves the frustration of doing up all the screws only to find it's still wrong.

BTW, whilst it's all apart, a couple of useful jobs:
- Remove and clean the drain bungs (one under the wiper motor, one under the ECU). If blocked, the scuttle fills with rainwater and can damage either the wiper motor or ECU.
- Wash down the valance panel properly (use an old toothbrush) and treat with plastic and rubber treatments - best chance to do it properly.
- Clean out any leaves and crap
- When refitting the valance, start with the centre screw - nuch easier to line it up.

would it not be because of the splines on the wipers (little blocks that only let you put them in at certaion angles) could you not just re position the wiper arms as the movement range should be the same!
