Hey folks,

Rear wiper doesnt seem to work very often - it'll work (slowly) then die alltogether. Then it'll run with a REALLY annoying clicking noise. Opening and slamming shut the boot used to get rid of this, but doesn't sort the problem any more.

Any ideas?

Hiya fiatfan and welcome :). Have you had a look at the contacts where the boot lid joins the back of the car? There should be a couple of brassy conact plates there that sometimes get dirty and cause problems. There is also something that goes on inside the boot lid, but having never had the problem get this far, I can't help on that one!

Hello, May I lend a hand? The contacts Helz refers to are small rows of copper contacts which supply the electrics to the washer motor, tailgate brake lights, etc.
Anyway, if you clean these contacts with a small strip of very fine emery paper and apply a little Petroleum jelly [Vaseline to you!]to stop them corroding again, this should help. There are also spring loaded pins mounted in the boot lid which line up with the contacts. These too need cleaning if necessary and greasing. Check the spring action too in case any have failed – that is the spring feels weak when depressed. Hope this helps. Regards… ;)

Thanks Sparky, I got as far as the contacts but forgot to mention what to do with them (clean them!) once you had found them, cut myself off midpost! D'oh.

Hello, I'm new here looking for info on this exact problem. Never knew about this site. It seems great.

My rear wiper has completely given up the ghost now. No clicking, no movement. Do you reckon the motor has gone completely or a dodgy conection somewhere? Everything else at the back works ok so I assume the contacts are ok.

Hello fatwa, and welcome.
Have you made sure the contacts and pins in the rear tale gate and at least clean and that the springs in the boot lid pin assembly and still applying some tension, otherwise you could just have an ‘open circuit’ – that is the contacts aren’t meeting and so no current can get to the motor. That’s the first thing to check. If you have some idea of car electrics, your next move is to see if there is an electrical feed to the contact in the lower tail gate which supplies current to the wiper motor. For this you will need a tester. Nice and cheap from your local motor factors! What ever.. Anyways, all you need really is to connect the trailing lead’s croc clip to a good grounded part of your car. The tester end you dab on each contact in turn to find the ‘live’ one. This you would do with the car in neutral, hand break on.
Ignition on but do not start the engine. At this point if you have found a contact that is alive, then you really need to remove the boot lid cover to get to the motor.Your fault could even be rust build up in the tale gate hinges! Who knows? From here you will have to pursue the fault through to the wiper motor with the aid of your trusty HAYNES manual. Other than these few details if you’re not too sure how to do this job you really need to find help locally.
;)

the rear wiper motor sucks. The armature is sub standard ( as I found out . After you have checked the electical connections and it still doesnt work its time to hit the scrap yards... but dont pay too much for a working one... cause it will fail on you too.

Ive only had my bravo for 4 months now ..but Ive learned a lot about its many faults.

i have i have just had a prob with my rear wiper on my 99s bravo, it was just continuosly clicking with the ign on, i took it off and theres a black box with the electrical connections, if you renove this box underneath there are 3 metal contacts, all i did was wipe these clean and its worked ok since. sorry for the long aand probably to late post.

my rear wiper only works when you lift the arm off the glass, which is fairly useless really, aint it? As soon as you lower the arm,it stops and a clicking noise comes from somewhere in the tailgate.[:(!]

Met Cognac 99 Brava 100 HSX,
