Hi all. My daughters car (I'm driving at the moment), is a Fiat 500 1.2 2010 Lounge (manual).

Recently I noticed the handbrake was not as effective, so I had to pull it up more for it to hold on an incline.

Then later that week, I noticed when braking and slowing down to under ~10mph to near stop, there is a loud griding/scraping sound coming from the rear nearside corner.

I believe this to be the rear nearside drum brake, as it makes the sound if putting the handbrake on too (at lower speeds).

Weirdly, it sometimes does not make this sound at all....?

I think (no expert), that the pads have worn down to near metal and this is what I am hearing?

I have it booked in for inspection at my local/trusted garage this coming Friday, but wondered on any thoughts/ideas.

Thank you.

Id check it sooner rather than later! and not drive it till its been looked at!.
Its not Likely!- but is is possible!- that part of the shoe retaining mechanism has broken and therefore either the shoes are no-longer secured, or a broken part may be free floating in the drum( which is why it only makes the noise at random!) with the potential to jam up without warning!.

Alternately as you say something MAY be worn to the point of metal to metal contact but this does not explain why the noise comes and goes!
Either way dont risk yours or others safety until its been looked at! and drive vey carefully when you take it to the garage with minimal breaking for obvious reasons.

In over 2 years on these forums i dont recall another incidence of this so
A) treat with caution &
B) when you find out post up what it was to potentially help others.
Hopefully its an easy and safe fix that dont cost to much!. take care! (y)

So.... update:

Took to garage this morning and they have confirmed as below, referring to nearside rear:

Rear shoes disintegrated and have scored the inside of drums.

Also the drum cylinder has seized, which I guess is the cause of the shoe disintegration etc etc.

They are holding onto the car (dangerous to drive) and will sort mid next week.

I just think of the times I was driving it with this issue..... 👀
