if I have a break in one of the lines or wires of the rear demister would that stop it from working?
A: Yes.
if Fuses/switch are good,
Then it couid be a broken /chaffed wire too,
check inside the rubber boot..between tailgate & car,

if its the lines that make up the heater then only the line that is broken should not work,
if its one of the larger tracks that feed several lines then non of the lines distal to the break will work.
if its the whole heating element thats not working then its as oldhammer says likely fuse, switch or wiring to the rear screen

there is some paint you can buy to repair broken tracks, its very fiddly but did manage to repair most of mine years ago, usualy makes the track a bit wider where you have repaired it but seems to work ok, hardest part is finding all the breaks
