RC Helicopter, addictive.

RC Helicopter, addictive.

My eldest son received an RC Helicopter like the one in the link below. I'm completely amazed by it. So much so I've just installed a second set of batteries as I've used up the first set ...

Very addictive, its the challenge of learning to fly by vision alone, a machine that in real life actually depends on the "seat of the pants" sensations as well as instruments.I cant get a main rotor shaft fo my busted 'copter... been trying 6 months now.

Sadly the guy flying in the vid isnt me... he better than me!

I attached a hook from one of my sons broken toys and have been picking things up all day. Very difficult to control with extra weight swinging below. I'm so addicted I've been searching the internet for a larger one for myself.

Some cracking bargains at a shop in Whitchurch, cant remember the name of the place but really helpful.....

Aha here.... http://www.whitchurchmodels.co.uk/

Foxy, you seem to know a lot about RC Helicopters. Am I right in thinking that I was able to fly this quite well after only 10 minutes because it has a Gyro in it that helps me fly it?
So if I wanted to purchase one for myself it would be best to buy one that also has a Gyro?

just get one made up ?

theres quite a few places near by that could make something up for you

one on halesfield 18 just off the mini island and one on halesfield 21 behind the place with the cherry pickers which is also next to bearing man so im sure they could make a rotor shaft up

I bought myself one from Aldi just before xmas (£20), took me an age to learn to fly it. I noticed in the vid as the copter took off it began to spin wildly - some serious editing going on.
also the use of the indoor footy pitch is a great help as it makes the copter so much easier to handle - I learnt in the confines of my dining room.

good job the rotors are not fixed - the number of times the copter has crashed I'd have broken them by now.

but yes, really addictive.

I've been flying my sons helicopter up and down our lounge. It did spin a lot at first but then I realised there is a small adjuster on the remote that synchronize's the twin rotors and cancels out unwanted tail spin. Once I got that set(small 1 foot high flights) it was much easier to control the helicopter. I can now take off and land on a box of Milk Tray and hook up a polystyrene cup and do one lap of our lounge.

Always opt for a gyro equipped copter Shady, it's what has made RC Helis usable for the masses. Real Helis fly with plenty left foot input (oddly right foot input for French machines...) to counter torque reaction from the main motor, this is hugely reduced with contra-rotating main rotors though.

Buy the best you can afford, some Helis have variable "talent" modes where easy flying can happen, then switch in more options. A good shop should let you try before you buy, I'd recommend joining a club if you get serious about it.... and look to advance to an all mode "fueller..."

Its a special by the look of it Whitz, the plastic top rotor UJ moulding has sheared, very common on the Alloy Shark I have so stocks move fast.

Good to hear you are all having fun!! That's what Christmas is for.
Just a small word of caution Shadey. We once bought our son an RC car for Christmas as you do. To say he got the RC bug is an understatment. Within 2 months the original car was literally burnt out and I had bought a second hand XRay Touring car. Within 2 years his "hobby" was literally costing me hundreds and within 5 years we were at the European Championships and spending a fortune on tyres, spares, travelling etc.
You have been warned!
It was great fun though!!!

I had a Savage 4.6 for 3 years and loved it. Great fun, been thinking about buying another but these helicopters are so bloody adictive.
