yes, they just require determined pulling... Jim's the man to ask. he's destroyed a chair or two before while refurbishing.

Unclip the cover at the lower rear of the seat back. Use a torch to look up inside the seat back and you will see two cross clips on the head rest shafts. Remove these clips ( be carefull or you will cut yourself to ribbons ) and then the head rest will pull out from the top.
