I realised near to where I live (better be rough just incase) is the People's Republic of China's consulate. The security is high - possibly 10ft tall metal fencing, the stuff you don't climb or easily cut, plus a low wall to stop cars. However, my question is, I always thought that the people's republic of China was Taiwan, but my friends said it was just China with Hong Kong, who's speaking BS?

Cheers

Here goes - I have expert help here from my Chinese housemate. Emma says hello.

The 'Republic of China' was founded in 1912 and had soverignty and administration over China, Taiwan and various other bits and pieces. It was overthrown by the communists in the Chinese civil war of 1949, who founded 'The People's Republic Of China'. The government of the Republic of China evacuated to Taipai and continued to claim soverignty over everything, but soverignty and administration for mainland China were both claimed and held by the People's Republic of China. The ROC exists still and while it has dropped it's claim to China itself it still administers Taiwan while the PROC has soverignty.

So basically The PROC has soverignty over China and Taiwan and administers China
The ROC (a completely different organisation altogether) currently administers Taiwan but there is much debate over whether it should remain ROC controlled or become PROC controlled or become a republic itself.

Emma XXX

Hope that solves your problem Paul I'm certainly enlightened!

Cheers Richard and Emma, I guess I should have asked my Chinese friend but hey ho, FF knowledge base is good!

OK how do you spell soverignty then that doesn't look right!?

Apparently!

Although, I do see where I made the mistake now. The whole ROC vs. PROC must have got me confused :)

Steve, the first time I had eegit was when I read Round Ireland with a fridge, it is just a word for idiot right?

Sovereignty it is than, I was trying to fit that e in somewhere!

I never even knew Taiwan had anything to do with China.
