General punto multijet fuel filter problem

T14086, I am also interested in this and
would be really grateful if you could describe the procedure for the Multijet fuel filter
change, as I am only familier with the old canister type.
Does the whole filter unit need to be taken off onto a bench? Do the connectors at the bottom of the filter just pull off and what tool and technique is needed to remove the fuel lines from the filter? Any precautions?

( Thanks for this, its just that its so different to the old spin off type)

I finally managed to change the filter today, I found it much easier to completly remove the filter body from the car and clamp it in a vice, I then undid the top with a very large pair of monkey grips, one tip to note, when you reassemble, fill the filter body with clean diesel, this helps to prevent airlocks when you restart the car.
Its made a huge difference to the running, the old filter was absolutley black, it now free revs upto 4200 rpm, with no lag, it feels like a different car.

Thanks Bobian, thats helpful, What mileage did you do it at? and can you advise on the connectors ?
Cheers

The car has 42000 miles on BUT I believe it should have been done earlier, maybe 24 or 36000. As for the pipes, they are easy, theres 3, 1 on the top fuel out, 2 on the side, fuel in and return from the injectors, all of the connectors are simple push fit, you push the fitting in and pull the pipe connector at the same time and hey presto it pops off. to remove the filter body from the car, it simply slides up out of a holder, once off you can clamp it in a vice and carefully unscrew the top with a very large pair of stilsons or monkey grips, I tried an oil filter strap, but it didnt generate enough pressure to undo.
My filter was absolutley black, the car used to suffer from a bit of lag when you put your foot down, I put this down to the turbo, but its much better now, feels like a different car.
Fiat wanted 23 + vat for a filter, I got one for 10 + vat from ggbs italian car specialist in bradford, they do mail order I think, if you quote your reg no, they will make sure you get exactly the right filter their no is 01274 733727.
hope this helps

has someone got a photo of this? sorry for beinbg thick but i just cant picture where it is in the engine bay. or any idea of location?

could this help to get the cover off? how big is the diameter of the casing?

Thanks Bobian81
Now we know how to do the Fuel Filter on the Multijet, it seems we can service the whole engine, with the oil and air filters being easier.

So if a mod reads this what about it? and saving this thread (or the essential part)
to allow people to save money by servicing their own car?

Alfie, Its at the back of the engine bay on the right, up against the suspension turret.
black plastic,

Alfie, I think its big waterpump pliers from Halfords, not a strap wrench.

i wish! nah im in the west midlands, i know the one you mean now. ill have to get this done in the new year, im on 43k and i think its still the original filter!

cheers chaps

I always thought that in the past fuel filters were specified for change too often.
I cut one ( old canister type) open once with a hacksaw at the 12,000 specified change interval and it was still clean.
I think Fiats change interval for the Multijet is much more realistic.
With an 85 Polo which was looked after by me for 17 years and 116,000 miles, the original *petrol*fuel filter was fine for all of that time.
Now oil filters... I change them along with the oil at half the recommended interval.

Re the Multijet, has anyone experienced anything of note ?
(Mine is an 05 model with low mileage.)
