Thing is, you'd need to spend serious money to make it a real performer, so make things easier for yourself, go for styling and ice, then when you can afford it/you've got some no claims, move upto a GT or something.
K&N induction kit - £50ish, makes a noticeable improvement to response & accelaration.
EBC brakepads - £55ish, far better than the standard trash
Full service with decent (i.e. GTX/Magnatec etc) oil, new plugs (NGK), oil filter and air filter (unless you fit the induction kit!) - £20ish for the lot. Servicing makes a noticeable improvement to the engine's performance.
Prices are assuming you do all the work yourself - if not then the labour charges will be huge!
