Technical Punto mk2b gear cable issues

I have a punto mk2b 1.2 8v, 2005 and since I bought it 3 years ago the gear cable selector(left one) that moves gear front/back has broken twice. The spare part I used was Akron 29519. Does anyone know what might be the reason?
I suspect the aftermarket Akron cable is shorter than it should be.
Please suggest ideas on how to avoid breaking again or tell me if it is very common to happen all the time...
