Hi,
Got a MK2b and I think the clutch is going on it. Its a 1.2 8V

I read somewhere before that if you lower it and put 17" wheels on it could put pressure on the clutch and it will break.

My car is making a tapping noise when the clutch is up, but if i put the clutch down it goes away. When im driving in 1st and 2nd gear it gets faster the tapping noise. My dad thinks its the clutch, any ideas?

Also if it is the clutch, rather than replacing it with a standard clutch and it breaking again, is there a better type to get? and also where from (preferably in the north east somewhere like newcastle)

Any help is appreciated, thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Firstly, I can't see a connection of lowering and clutch damage - the two systems are completely separate. The only thing that would change on lowering the car, in relation to the transmission, is the angle the driveshaft enters the differential.

As for your noise, it is possible that it could be coming from any one of an enormous number of sources, not just the clutch!

First of all, read this "general checks" guide:

https://www.fiatforum.com/punto-gui...-sources-wear-checks-steering-suspension.html

When your satisfied that all is well here, you should next turn your attention to under the bonnet...

While the car is stopped, get an assistant *cough dad cough* to watch what is going in the engine bay when the clutch pedal is pressed and released - with and without the engine running (just be very careful it is out of gear before starting the engine if someone is standing in front of the car - best to watch from the side really).

Also try revving the car a little (in neutral!) and listening for the tapping you describe - it could be valve, belt, bearing, etc related.

If the fault is not reproducable while the car is stationary, find a piece of quiet road with a slight gradient, roll down your windows and then test to see if the noise increases in volume when going up the hill versus coming down the hill in different gears. Testing it in the next highest gear than it should be while going uphill will let you establish if what you are hearing is a "pinking noise" - if it's doing this even when in the correct gear, it could relate to a ignition/timing issue. The problem with on the move tests is that, when you press the clutch, you disconnect the power to the wheels and a load-induced noise could be very difficult to find.

It may just be the clutch release bearing and, so long as the clutch is in good condition and you can live with it, it's just a nuisance!

Try this stuff out and post back on your findings and we can take it from there.

Remember - work safe and keep an open mind for fault sources!

Hi,
thanks for your reply. I haven´t tested this out yet as im on holiday in Spain, but im flying back to england today (in a few hours) so just thought i´d jump on here to check for any replies whilst waiting for the coach to come.

When I get home, on Sunday morning I´ll do these tests and post the outcomes.

Thanks
Tommy

Hi,
took my car to a garage and then confirmed its a problem with the clutch bearing.

I asked if they have an upgraded type of clutch rather than fitting a standard clutch. They said there isnt one for my punto 06 mk2b 8v.

Is this right? What would the best type of clutch be to fit does anyone know? i read that a stilo one would fit or am i wrong?

Any help would be great, and if anyone knows of any good place to get it done at in the northeast, preferably newcastle, sunderland, washington etc would be great.

Thx tommy

Hi again.

I have found this site clutch specialists anyone know if these makers are decent, i also heard of techniclutch.

Any suggestions?

Best clutch is the standard one. Yes you can buy racing or sports clutches but they will be WAY to harsh for road use and you'd end up stalling everywhere/wheel spinning all the time or at very least give you your passengers a very jerky ride.

There have been a few discussions about which clutch is best on here recently, Valeo are the best for the 8v imo

yeh, shop4parts.co.uk are good, or try your local motor factors for a valeo clutch.

Then again if you are having a garage fit it, they might be able to source you one for cheaper (depending if you know the mechanic i spose)

Ok thanks for your help :)

I went on shop4parts, but it dont seem like they do a valeo clutch for the 1.2 06 reg, only a 1.8 HGT. They have the fiat ones. I'll have a look about though now that I know what to look for.
Thanks
