Technical Punto Mk2 (02) turns over but won't start.. ECU?

OK hoping I can shed light here now.

I went out this morning, the car having failed to start all last evening, and tried again. Still wouldnt start, and this time seemed to drain power quickly and struggle to turn over the starter motor, which is something it didnt do before. Before it would turn over as long as I wanted to try it but this time it seemed to drain really easy.

All the battery talk I saw on here led me to thinking, "what if I try jump starting it from another car and see if it starts". And......It did. Started first time on being jump started.

Sooooo!!! Is it that the battery is knackered and has been slowly on the way out which is why it has not been starting for abut 3 weeks having been fine for the first 2 weeks that I had it (Ive only had it 5 weeks). Or is the alternator knackered and not charging the battery? I'm going to try and use a battery charge checker tonight to see if this is the case.

Hopefully we might be getting to the bottom of this

Nick

Well I got a voltmeter on the battery tonight.

Battery as is without any load was at about 12.5 volts.
When I tried to start the car, which really struggled but managed to get started eventually after 3 attempts it dropped to 9.2 ish
Attached jump leads from other car, running, and reading went up to 13.5 with no load.
Starting, fired first time straight away with reading dropping to 10.5 during start.

So I reckon it isnt giving enough power for the ECU to read that the engine is at the correct speed so it isnt firing. What do you think?

OK just wanted to update you all, so that anyone searching this with the same problem can see the solution.

It was the battery. For some reason it was giving enough power for the starter motor but not the ECU to fire the plugs.

New battery sorted it out straight away and no problems since, even in this cold weather.

Thanks to all for the help.
