Hi, wonder if anyone can shed some light on a problem i have with my punto. i posted on here a few weeks back that i had a juddering noise coming from rear passenger side wheel, few people advised me it was prob a badly fitted exhaust. well anyway, head gasket went and i have done a diy job and got it running perfectly, but i have neglected to look at the wheel / exhaust. it only happens when travelling at 50 to 60mph. i jacked it up today and got a hold of the wheel and gave it a shake, there was a fair amount of play on the wheel when enough force was applied, it was a struggle to actually move wheel and look under at same time but there was definate play and i think i can say for certain its that and not exhaust. The play doesnt seem to be on wheel hub it seems to be more susp strut area but cant say for certain....

question is, what could be wrong? im still pretty much a novice when it comes to cars but fairly mechanically minded (an engineer) and i coped well with the head gasket change (with some help from this forum!), so is this something i could do myself or am i better off paying a visit to local garage?

any help / advice welcome and appreciated!! Cheers!!!

Either:
1) rear radius arm Jack car up and get someone to try and move the wheel while looking at the arm. if it moves then you can get a kit to repair these for about £10. will either be really easy or a real pain.

2) rear subframe bush. Do the same as above but you should notice the subframe moving. Replace the bushes, never brought a set so dont know cost but reasonably easy task to do if you have axle stands and good socket set.

3) Wheelbearing. Normally will give a rumbling sound that varies with your speed as well as an amount of movement. Never done one on these but heard they can cause other problems when you do them (think you damage the hub so need to buy hub and bearing).

thanks for help, it's looking like no.1 on the list like, radius arm. found a repair kit on ebay, 13.99 so bought myself one of those. checked with nta for a price to save me the bother and they wanted 269.00 to replace the whole radius arm. how ridiculous! well thats my weekend sorted then... sigh.....

are there any guides on here with regards to just replacing the bushes etc with the repair kits? i saw a post somewhere saying this method isnt supported by haynes manual so im gonna need some guidance on this one i think.......

These bushes are an easy repair. You can buy a repair kit from ebay (do all 4). Simply put the car on ramps, Undo 1 bolt, fit new bush over old, replace nut to the specified torque. repeat for the other 3. Job done. Kits is about £24.05 posted.

doesnt the noise come from there, are u supposed to fit the bush between
There is a bush in between. This is a quick fix to make sure there is no movement in the axle if the bush underneath perishes. This will not fix the the knocking as it will not do anything to the radious arm if the bearing is died. The redius arm bearing appears to be common failure on punto as I had to replace both of them. If you let the radious arm bearing broken for too long a repair kit may not be usable and a whole arm will need to be replaced.

They are two common issues. The first is the radious arm bearings, the second is the subframe mounting bushes. The radious arm is notiable by a knocking noise and play in the arm, the subframe mounting is noticeable by a knocking and movement in the rear subframe.
The picture shows the rear subframe mount (rear drivers side?) Looking at it again it allready has the repair done to it. The only other repair is to replace the bush. This means disconnectint the brakes (hydraulic and cables), removing the four bolts, removing the offending bush and having a new one pressed in (the exhaust needs moving out of the way as well). Depending on the car it might be worth spending money on doing the other three at the same time or getting another rear subframe.

So have you checked what is wrong with yours? arm or subframe?
