I am looking for a parcel shelf that fits my punto so that i can fit m the 6x9s im about to buy into. I want a new one, cus the original is pretty flimsy and it kinda rattles without any speakers on.
If anyone has any ideas where i could get one cheap as chips they would be helping me alot.
Thanks (y)

Hi mate,

Try E-Bay or scrap yards. Theres loads of them about. Can pick them up for about a fiver.

Hope that helps,
Alan

Thanks i will have a look (y)
Is it a good idea to get an acoustic shelf or is it not worth it?

what size MDF did you use? because that sounds like a plan!
So is it not a good idea using the original shelf then?

Original shelf means you can see the speakers from outside and I'd rather hide them than get broken into personally!

I used 12mm thick MDF (the shelf is 16mm deep so with carpet it is a near perfect fit).

A aren't certain on the other dimensions as I dont have a tape measure to hand, spent some time getting M8 bolts sunk into a chunk of mdf to use as the pivots (I think they were M8 sized anyway, worth checking if you have some bolts about)

what does it look like? a little ugly, but it does the job? or not too shabby? cus of the change in levels on the original shelf.
Sorry to ask so many questions, its just i havnt seen a proper shelf with 6x9s, only my mates, and his shakes badly cus its the original shelf. I appreciate the info (y)

It's too dark to get any decent photo's mate (without charging the flash lamp anyway)

I'l get a picture or so up tomorrow afternoon when I get back from my little outing, I think I've made a nice job of all but the underside (don't see it much tbh) and I havent put any lift strings on yet!

The fabric I used was the thickest speaker cloth I could get off Maplins and it's about 2mm thick so it's an almost perfect fit (the MDF edges all have curves and everything underneath) and the only downside is the bit between the seat and the parcel shelf has a small gap to allow it to move; still havent decided how to go about that bit.

You ok with waiting till tomorrow afternoon/evening...?

Speaker cloth is from Maplin Electronics (had to postal order it)

The cloth is:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=17721 to be exact I got the mottled cloth, it comes 1.5m wide and you order it in lengths of 0.25m and it all comes as one large piece if you order more than 1 lol

The bonding agent I used was this (think superglue in spray form!)
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=36122

When bonding the carpet to the MDF, put newspaper down underneath so as not to stick it to the floor, people, stools, ceilings (and many other things I was tempted to stick it to :p)

The size of cloth needed was 1.5m by 0.75m (ie 3 units off their site).

By the way, the shelf was made to the same size as the stencil then planed down to fit with the fabric placed on one side and doubled over to (you can't put it back on after all) so that it made a good fit, the edges were then carefully filed to give a gentle curve. The rear curve to the seats was made too long and then cut down for a similar reason to allow the shelf to pivot, I can measure the gap tonight, and if I aren't too tired I'l take the shelf out and take some pictures of the pivot beam (also add's some strength).

The 6x9 leads have 3.5mm socket to plug adapters so I can swap from those back to the smaller mounts when I can't use the parcel shelf and from maplins that cost about £5 for 4 plugs and 2 sockets.

PLEASE NOTE:
It is very important to wear a mask when working with MDF as the dust can be carcinogenic! I aren't taking any responsibility caused to people ignoring this advice!

That looks pretty decent actually. Thanks for the pics.
Helped me make my mind up i think lol.

Don't forget you've got several branches of Maplin within about twenty minutes' drive from the centre of Brum, so won't need it posting. I think RS components do that thin carpet as well. I know you can get it off ebay, but you'll have to wait a few days for that.........

I have a spare parcel shelf for a MkI with the holes already cut if you or anyone else wants it.

Do you think that it (standard MK1 parcel shelf) would shake with the 6x9s on it? (i.e. when they play music)
and what would you want for the spare shelf you have?

Not many stock and cut the fabric to order, best to check on their site tbh.

I have already fitted them and it doesnt rattle ( or at least not noticably) so all i want now is a spare parcel shelf for when i get rid of the car, so it doesnt look tacky with a couple of holes in it lol
Thanks for everyones advice.
