Technical Punto Gearbox swap?

Hi there , im new to the forum and have a query im hoping someone on here might be able to help me with , my girlfriend drives the 2005 Fiat punto 1.2 xbox and the gearbox is giving up the ghost , car still drives fine but has an awful grinding noise that sounds like a bearing has gone in there somowhere , my main question is do i have to replace it with a 16v gearbox or are all the 1.2 box's pretty much the same and is it a big job , had a silly quote of 860 to supply and fit and im not interested at that price lol , would really appreciate any advice anyone can give , many thanks

Input shaft bearing possibly, why not get the bearing replaced.

thanks will look into that , just wondered if anyone knew if most punto mk2 gearbox's would fit ???
