Hi i have a 06 plate Punto. It will not select any gears unless manually moved under the bonnet. The lever will only move forward and back. Been advised it needs a new cable (front to back). Had a look there are two cables which one is required? and is it an easy job to fit them any advice or pictures would be helpful.

Been quoted about £80 + vat for the pasrt and 30 mins to repair by a local fiat specialist.

Got the cover off the bottom of the box that was easy not sure which cable to order is it the one from the bottom of the lever that goes to the gearbox gear selector?

cheers

The exact same thing happened to me on Thursday. Would only select 4th gear, but would float freely between the 3rd and 4th position. No sideways movement.

However, if you select neutral (From under the bonnet), you should be able to move side to side, and move the gear stick into, say, first or second.

If that's the case, you will need the longitude cable. That's the one with the extra 'adapter bit' on the end.

The long and the short of it is you can get the cable from your local Fiat dealership, but they're not often in stock in many places, so ring around.
Also, Fiat recommend that if one goes, the other one won't be in best health, so it is advised to replace both at the same time. But at £95 each (from Fiat), it's your call!

That's a reasonable quote though. Mine cost around £100 in total. Cable ended up being about £80 I believe.

Good luck!

Trouble with getting it from a breakers is that by the time you've bought it from them, faffed around getting the plate off and fitted it, it could still break at any time, since it is likely just as old as the one you're replacing.

Seems like a no-brainer just to buy a new one
