I have a 51 plate Punto elx jtd. performance is sluggish until at working temperature. Once temp is reached there is a lack of urge above 3,000 in 1st and 2nd. Big step in power at around 2,700 - 3,000 rpm in higher gears. Is this normal?

Hello and WELCOME TO THE FORUM!

The performance you describe is not normal and is likely to be due to one of two things. Either the MAF sensor or EGR valve.

To test and replace/clean the MAF sensor have a look at this GUIDE. I would start by testing this first, as its a quick simple test.

If this does not solve your problem, then the EGR is likely to be your cause. Have a look at this GUIDE for its location etc. To test it simply put a blanking plate between the inlet manifold and the corrugated pipe leading to the egr. Take it for a drive and see if the problem has gone. If it has, then the EGR is the problem. Simply cleaning it with some engine degreaser (off the car of course) may solve it, if not, a new one is around £70 from fiat.

Hope that helps,
Alan
