Technical Punto 51 plate ECU decisions

Hiya all,

We have a 51 plate fiat punto, the car is only running on two cyclinders. We have changed the coils and sparks. So we have two decisions.
1/ garage is going to fit second hand ecu and change the transponder....will this work? The ecu on the car we have is M3. But the bloke is fitting a P3.
2/ buy a M3 from ebay plug in and play

What would people suggest?

You might try new leads first. Otherwise, as Roman says.

If it's running on 1&4 or 2&3 then a coil/ECU fault is likely in which case I'd go for the recon ECU. It's worth bearing in mind that the head gasket could have blown between two adjacent cylinders but I would have assumed the garage would have twigged that.

Not if they didnt do a compression test

By "twigged that" I was assuming they had done basic checks.

I'd be asking how they diagnosed the issues before accepting the proposed fix.
