Technical Punto 2003 handbrake not staying up

Hi

My Punto car handbrake is not locking, when I pull it up and expect it to lock, it comes down. Got someone to look at it and he informed that the smaller teeth have gone smooth and full handbrake needs replacing. if I dont cover it and push the smaller wheel by hand then it locks OK. can someone please advise if it is possible to fix without replacing the full handbrake? how much will it cost of buy a new one?

The locking mechanism might just be dirty and need a good clean and lubrication. They can wear out if the handbrake is continually dragged up across the teeth. Rare enough event but a big nono for mot/nct tests. If cleaning and lube doesn't work , I would look for one from a scrappy.
