I have a 1996 P Reg Punto which I have had since November, I have already had a problem with the head gasket going on it but forked out £300 for it to be fixed, now lately I have had a problem with gears. Let me explain.

When I put the clutch fully down its seems fine (no noise, no hesitation, perfect) but when I move the gear stick into 1st it will not go, it is very stiff, it will only go if you really force it but it feel as if it will snap, 4/5 times it will not go into first, so I have been starting off in 2nd to get home from work, the problem has only started no more than a day ago.

When going into 2nd, it is slightly stiff and needs a little push but not as much as 1st, then 3rd/4th and 5th are slightly stiffed but fine nevertheless.

Reverse, when I go into reverse it makes a noise (exactly the noise that is made when the car is not in gear properly but you are moving).

What could be the problem? Gear box? Clutch cable? or other???? PLEASE HELP! Thanks!

PS: Is there any sort of test I could do to find the problem out or would it be best to leave to a garage? What do you think prices will range from?

Was driving through Liverpool City Centre and guess what? Yes you guessed it, clutch or gear box went on me at the lights in one of the busiest streets. So I managed to push it into a bus stop and have left it there until I can get a toe.

I spoke to a Policeman who has informed the Police that it has broken down but he said to me you need to get it home ASAP or you will get ticketed plus it may get toed away.

But I dont know anyone who can toe it and Im not prepared to fork out £100's more for it to get fixed, Id rather scrap it.
