General problem engaging the first gear when car in motion

Hi,

I am not able to engage into first gear when car is rolling. If it is stand still I can do easily but not while in motion. Somebody told me it could be a gear box , because it was bit noisy in first , second and third gear. I changed it (got used one). Still the same problem persist. Also some screeming noise coming for a while from bonet when I move off from first gear.

Please help me I already spend a fortune for this car.

If i can assume it is the mk1 then i think i may know the problem. I have also had a mk1 punto with a similar 'problem' it transpired that this is a generic occurrence with the mk1 gearbox (based on 4 puntos i have driven in the past). I did speak to fiat on this and a local garage and it appears that it was a safety mechanism that they put in place to save the gearbox, i.e. if you put it into first at high revs. I basically had to learn to dip the clutch and keep it in 2nd - not ideal i know.
