Remember a problem I had when starting car, mentioned in a previous thread? Well I booked it into a garage for next week so they could have a look at it. Came to start my car this morning and it didn't. Got AA out, and they said starter motors gone, and the previous problem was probably the starter motor staying engaged, thus burning itself out. Anyone else heard of this? So me and my mates push started it and off I went to a garage and they said same thing. So hopefully it'll all be sorted by the end of the weekend. If the new starter motor doesn't solve the problem I had before they are going to have a look for me. Anyone else had their starter motor replaced, and if so how much did it cost. They've quoted me 170 quid. Sounds dear to me, but all the local garages can't do it for a few weeks, and this is a national chain.

Third party startermotor costs about 165£ here in Sweden, so 170£ if that include labour sounds good. But then ofcourse all parts seems cheaper in UK than Sweden.

had a starter motor on my mk2 punto about 2 months a go that was more than £170 i think, but was under warranty so dint have to pay.

i have heard of of starter motors staying engaged and burning out. but re reading your previous problem i cant see how that was casuing all your problems how ever i aint no mechanic :D so fingers crossed it was the casue of all of em.

hmm just thinking about it, i suppose the starter sticking on could cause a strange noise and you reving engine disngaged it and thus turning to normall so maybe that was the cause...........oh what do i know lol

good luck anyway

Cheers, I'm no mechanic either sounded plausible though! Sounds like Im not gettin ripped off then as that includes labour. Once they've done that, they'll turn engine on and hear it (if it wasnt the starter motor that was cause of the problem) and have a look at it for me. Alls good, will update when I get it back.

I must really say I envy the prices on stuff from the brakers in UK. Here they want around 60% of the price of a new. Which makes it no point in buying, I rather buy new and pay the last bit. I think its because there was no that many mk1 puntos sold so there arent many to take parts from.

Sorry for the offtopic :)

your best bet is to have a go yourself, it is quite easy.
disconnect your battery, undo the connections to the motor and i think there are 3 or 4 bolts to undo.
remove the starter motor and exhange it at a motor factors.
mine for an HGT 1.8 is going to cost £86

Shhh... you can all stop tellin me how much I could have done it for now! Got car back this morning, running fine on start up now, so we are assuming it was the starter motor that caused the problem.

I can't believe how much you chumps are paying for your starter motors!

Don't buy a brand new Official Denso part or a new one from a third party, you instantly throw the best part of £100 down the drain. Get a reconditioned one from a local breakers yard. Mine came with a 6 month warranty, and cost me £40 + £5cashback for my old one = £35.

(Modern starters and alternators are relable parts these days, even on an Italian car, so although its reconditioned i doubt I'll ever replace it again in the cars lifetime)

Then if you don't fancy fitting it yourself, call a local garage and tell them your punto needs its starter replaced, tell them you have the part and ask them how much they would charge for an hours labour to fit it.

My garage charged me £30 labour.

Total £65. for part and labour.

Big savings for a little more work on my behalf!

Be careful though when buying your starter.

There is an 8T,9T and 10T (tooth) options depending on your engine spec. Take care to read your existing parts id plate using a mirror and torch if necessary (its attached next to the alternator on the bottom rear of the engine block - just follow the big red wire from the battery).

Crossreference the long 8 digit no. on your starter with the models sold on the below website to find out what catagory of starter you have. (Most likely 0.8-0.9kW 8T, 12Volt)
