Hi Guys

Need some advice. Driving a 2000 X Punto 1.2 with 40k on the clock.

The power steering has all of a sudden got a little tempremental! It works for a few minutes or a few days and then stops workign altogether!

My local garage tells me that this is a common problem and I need to change the whole power steering unit. The unit will cost in the region of £465!

I have been offered a "reconditioned" unit through Fiat for £265 with a 1 year warranty.

My questions are...

1. Is the unit kaput and does it need changing?

2. SHould I buy a new unit or the reconditioned one?

3. Will the reconditioned unit give up after a few years??

All advice much appreciated.

Hi and thanks for the reply

Would the local Fiat Dealership charge to "read the codes" and confirm exactly whats wrong? If so, what sort of money would they take?

Thanks

Depends on the garage rates & wether garage charges per hour or per part hour.Phone & ask but it shouldnt be more than £30-40.
Ask for a examiner printout to confirm exact fault...to be honest at £265 thats a good deal as a steering ECU will cost about that.
Good luck & let us know how you get on;)
