Need a bit of feed back :)

My Punto mk 2 1.9 JTD has, suprise suprise, developed a power steering fault :(

from reading on the Punto's before I seem to remember it being a fairly common-ish fault. I have just had a look on the guides and found some advice.
It seems having the Steering ECU read for logged error codes is a must.

Before I do this I shall just tell you the symptoms...

The fault ONLY occurs in reverse and only seems to happen when the steering wheel is pulled Left hand Down. and is then turned hard over in that direction.

It does not do it all the time.
Occasionally with the steering wheel in this position HARD over. there will be a click followed by further inch movement, rotation of the wheel, as if the coloumn has slipped a tooth on the rack. At this point the steering shuts down and the warning light illuminates.

Anything obvious come to mind as regards to the fact it seems to be reverse only, sensors?
or is it a code reader job..?
Could a poor battery voltage or poor sensor connection cause the system to shut down in this manner when its under full load.

Many thanks,
Bridges :)
