Hi

Before I start, I should say that I know very little about what goes on under a car's bonnet! Any help you may be able to offer needs to be in an 'idiot's guide' format! Thank you.

My 1.4 ie Tipo has developed a power loss problem. It usually happens at fairly low speeds (0-35MPH) and is intermittant, but seems to be happening more often. (n)
When I accelerate, the power suddenly dies and the car sounds like it is spluttering and struggling, before gradually returning to normal. The power loss lasts for only a few seconds at a time.
I'm not sure if it's related although I suspect it is, the fuel injector warning light comes on intermittently. The light does come on when I am having power loss issues, but it also comes on at other times. Unlike the power loss problem, the warning light seems to come at any speed too.

I have already had a couple of suggestions regarding the cause of this, after talking to a chap at my local Fiat dealer, as well as a friend who has a little more knowledge than me about cars.

The Fiat dealer suggested that I check at the back of the inlet manifold. He said that there are 2 30mm bolts where the earth leads go in. He said that these often come loose/get broken and that this could be the problem.

My friend said that it sounded like it could be a spark plug firing intermittently or one of the wires leading from the spark plugs? (I think I've got that right). He's going to come out with me for a drive later so he can listen to it and feel exactly what is happening, so I may have more information later today to post.

Any suggestions or comments you may have would be appreciated!

Thank you :)

broken down HT leads (from the spark plugs to the coil) could cause it, as could a poor earth strap. There are more issues like throttle potentiometers but that usually affects depending on how hard you have the throttle pushed - regardless of speed.
