do you know what kind of oil grade should I use?
I've used AGIP 10W40 all the years but API was SL/CF
Now I can find only SM/CF of AGIP I-sint 10W40 that should be better because it's SM.
it's not a problem to use a higher grade oil for a 1996 engine?

Should be fine, but beware of anything with extra detergent or you may find you're suddenly loosing compression!
Very little. I usually use a 10-40 semi synthetic from a well known supermarket chain on "cooking" 8v engines.

by searching this part number "PN71753738", I've found it fits Fiat Brava.
i would be concerned its a clone

That it's made in China may be a bit suspect. Not because the Chinese can't make great components, but because a lot of the time they choose not to.
It would be as easy for them to look up a part number as you: they're anything but stupid!

i got an oil filter from ECC the other day, said genuine part, all the right logo's but made in china. Is it not possible thats just where fiat get them from these days....?

by looking on ebay and ePer I can still find the old part number: 5984044

Quite possibly. After all, most of my TIG welder, mobile phone, computer and keyboard is.
As long as there's someone from FIAT doing the quality checking, I'd not worry.

every filter which u buy is manufactured for a very low price per unit so all are probably made cheap
