2 weeks ago I bought an N reg 1.6 Fiat Punto 90 ELX in black. It's a sexy little car called Nancy but she's sick!!

Went to the garage to have the downpipe replaced (a simple enough job), and the work was completed within the hour.

Went to pick her up and she wouldn't start!! It appears that she's immobilised herself!! I have the red key and both the blue keys, but none of them register with the car, and no fuel is being allowed to the engine.

Being new to Fiats (I've come from Peugeots), I have no idea how to use the 3 keys, or how the factory immobilisor works.

All the electric windows/electric sunroof/stereo/central locking still work, and the engine still turns, jus no fuel is being supplied to the engine, and there is no spark from the plugs.

Can someone please help, as it's my new car and I'm gutted to not be able to drive her!!

Either post here or PM me for my mobile number

Thanks guys

Dale

for the imobilser just too stop working like that right after getting some work done is a bit strange, i suspect foul play by the garage you had the work done at.
check see if they did any welding on the exhaust since most garages use mig welders its not imposible too blow up ecu's with those things if you dont prep the car right.

The only work the garage did was old downpipe off, then new one on, pretty straightforward stuff. I don't think any welding was needed.
How can a mig welder damage an ecu? Are there any other ways of damaging the ecu or codebox accidentally?
Will any 96 onwards Punto codebox work in my Punto?

MK1's had problems with the fuel cut off switch somtimes these need to be reset if someone has caught it although sometimes they were faulty anyway

the garage could break a part of the rest of the exhaust or have too mod the downpipe if its a dodgy pattern thing, im not saying it happened it just a unlikly possiblility that i could think off, ive been there before :D

as i was taught at college mig welders can damage ecu's and alternators through back emf i belive, other ways too blow up ecu's are too start the car with booster chargers set too high, jump starting off vehicles with 24v electrical systems, incorect operation of diagnostic equipment
(ive seen a body computer go this way, smoke and everything) :D
the fuel cutoff should be the first point of call although ive never seen one of these trip before.

Hi,

I thought the immobilisor cut the starter off as well as fuel pump, ignition etc.

If the engine is turning over then perhaps it is not the immobilisor, did you call the RAC or AA, they may have been able to find out for you.

the starters on its own circuit and is pretty much the say design car manufactures have been using for years.
the code imobiliser basicly cuts the fuelpump and coils.

its ur ECU i bet hav a look behind ur radio to see if the ecu is wet!! the heater matrix's leak on 1.6 iv found out the exact same thing happened to my punto!!
if its not went then it probably still is ur ECU!! let us no what happens

Ello all

Good news!! The Punto is up and running again. iIt was a combination of a few things, but I got it sorted in the end!

The main problem was the simple fact the the fuel pump lead had been pulled out!!! So everything was working there was jus no fuel. I also replaced the codebox and reset the ecu. All seems ok now. That was until I raced a Mitsubishi summat-or-other, kicked his arse the the clutch failed lol. That also seems to be ok now [^]
My car has a few little niggles that need sorting (like the tappets are really noisy) but apart from that, it should all be ship-shape by the end of the summer [8D]
