Forgive me for asking, but what's Pinging in terms of IP addresses? I know it sends a bit of "data" and waits for a reply... but what's the point??

CINQUECENTO DASHBOARD CLOCK WANTED - PLEASE PM ME

to test a connection, its a very basic network test

it can also be used to check the repsonse time of a network device

like for online gaming, you ping a server to see how quick it is and go for one with a low ping

Cinq Sporting - and yes, its broom yellow!

As a follow on, if you play on MSN Zone game servers, they call it latency. If 4 of you playing, say, and one has a low latency, then avoid!!!

I have no idea!

I suppose it comes it with age![V] Who here remembers the old Prestel days. Wow! I can even remember when email went national - before that, email could only be sent to someone who dialled into the same local server as you, or into the London one as a last, but very expensive, resort.

I remember my dad getting the first phone bill the first quarter after my mum had got me the VTX5000 modem for my speccy. Over £300 - lol - and that must have been around 1984! Aargh.......don't think he has ever forgiven me!

Not wanting to be really nerdy, but ping is the time an all round trip takes to get to the computer and back - *not affected by what the computer is doing* - latency is how long it takes the program (so in the case of msn, game) to take the packet and reply to it.

So it is possible for a very low ping, but high latency... :D

Oh, and to add to that... just because you can't ping something, doesn't mean its not on. It may be blocking ICMP packets via a firewall (helps again DDOS attacks...)

Spot the geek?! (just kidding!)

I am pretty good with computers but I didn't know the difference between a ping and latency, so i'm a dumb geek ;)

My first signiture (a lot of thought put into it): If you can't find the switch to switch your fogs off I am sure I can help you! Damn fogs.

Heard of ICMP before...wtf is it?
Also D...what Denial of Service attacks?
