Hello all,

I've just bought a new petrol tank for the sisley as the old one looks very ropey and has a leak at the filler tube. Tank arrived and looks to be the right one. Is got grease or something on it for protection presumeably, is there anything else I should do to it to rust 'proof' it?

For long lasting outside protection do as above and remove the grease and also any paint and take the tank back to bare metal. Then spray/ paint the tank with anti-rust primer (zinc primer is good), cover it with a coat of tough paint (Hammerite is good) then cover the whole lot in underseal. It won't look pretty but it should keep the rust moth at bay (y)

Definitely follow the above advice, they rust badly. As my fuel tank is out for welding. I spent a good chunk of today sanding/brushing/sandblasting it back to clean(ish) metal and painting with galvofroid (a good zinc primer).

I wouldn't use hammerite (expensive and prone to chipping I find). I'm going to paint mine with a cellulose paint, because it won't peal off if petrol leaks on it. Then, as said before, i'll underseal it too to protect it from stone chips.

I'd like to share some information with you:

Younger Panda models (mostly cars with MPi engines) have plastic (PVC?) fuel tanks. I don't really know if they are interchangeable with older steel ones but it is worth a try to find out... And I think they have a larger capacity, about 42l... So, no more troubles with external rust, leaks, rust residues inside...

No way, Gibanitza :( They are talking about tanks for Sisley (4x4), they are not interchangeable with plastic tanks for 4x2 Pandas (since 1986). 4x4 Pandas have rear diffs in places of fuel tanks in 4x2 Pandas.

BTW: Zulu705, where did you buy a brand new tank, and how much did it cost? Mine is also badly rusted, I can't refuell it to the full, it's leaking then ;-) It's impossible to buy a new tank for 4x4 in Poland.

These sell them

Not sure about overseas delivery though. There's a few old threads on the subject on here where I'm sure you can find the names of some more sellers.

I got one from Buy Parts By but they don't seem to list tanks on the site anymore.

BR

Edit: Fiat still have them but make sure you have a strong drink ready for when you hear the price.

Thanx!
I wouldn't even ask Fiat, I don't drink and the answer would kill me:D

If you can find the leak, you can seal it using a 2 part chemical metal style epoxy. That will work fine and give you a bit more life out your tank. More so if you paint it as well.

Ironically the older Unos (a lot of mk1's) have plastic tanks yet the later Unos (mk2's) have steel tanks. I'm planning on converting my mk1 45S to a 1242 16v MPi, so I need the later mk2 tank to be able to fit the in tank fuel pump. The mk1 tanks only have a small aperature to take the fuel sender, whereas the mk2 SPi tanks have a larger aperature that will take the electric fuel pump as well as the sender. I assume that the older/ younger Panda tanks are similar? So I have the fuel tank from a mk2 SPi Uno sitting my shed awaiting cleaning, painting and fitting to my mk1 in preparation for a future MPi engine transplant. It does seem like a retrograde step fitting a rust prone steel tank in place of a rust resisting plastic tank though

Yes, I know, but can't find time for that work:bang:.
