Hi folks,

Another one for all you gurus.
Off late my uno (1242cc SPI) is exhibiting a strange problem. As the title of this post says - there is a lot of petrol smell in the cabin. But there are certain preconditions for this to happen

1. It happens only when the engine is started after it has been off for a while - hence most prominently at the first start in the morning, but also any other time when the engine has been off for a 3-4 hours.
2. The smell gets into the cabin through the a/c vents and irrespective of whether it is set to draw in fresh air or re-circulate the internal air.
3. The smell goes away after the car has run for a few kms.
4. Once the smell is gone it does not return until condition #1 above happens again.
5. Another observation is that the chances of the smell appearing in the cabin is the highest when the fuel tank is full. I cannot substantiate this last point much as I have only observed it over one refueling cycle. (i.e The first time I smelled petrol the tank was full, but then as the tank emptied up the smell reduced. But couple days ago when I topped it up, the smell has grown stronger again.)

Any suggestions where to check and how?

I am not at all sure, but

1. Do you know anyone with some kind of gas detector. This fault sounds potentially dangerous.

2. Does your car have a fuel return line, are all the connections tight?

3. However are you totally sure about how the fume/smell is coming in. Could it be coming through the vents from the rear.

I am sure the fact that it is worse when the tank has been topped up is a significant sign. Check your fuel filler tube connections are all good and that any overflow pipe is properly located and not able to put fume into the car. Is there any chance the tank has a leak near the being full point.

Sorry I can't be much help but there are plenty of good guys on here who will know what is going on here.

thanks rawill.... I'll see what I can find and probably post it back once confirmed.

I had the same problem, in my case the tube that brings the petrol to the injectors (just below the admission) was cracked and petrol was dropping to the block, vaporising and smelling a lot!! you have to be really careful with all this m8!
