I've just sold a car on eBay. The buyer wants to pay by PayPal and get a transport company to collect the car. Does this sound ok? Any pitfalls to watch?

yup transfer the funds to your bank account 1st and not just your paypal account.personaly i would prefer a direct bank transfer as if there using a dodgy credit card paypal will expect the money back from you!
How does he sign the v5, youve no proof who you are selling to so the comebacks could be on you! Does the guy actually exist? I can understand why youre hesitant.

I've sent a message asking for a bank transfer instead, I'll see what he says. Would giving him my account number and sort code be safe though? I have a bad feeling about this.

no real problems with sort code and account no. think about it if oyu pay by cheque all those dtetails are on there.

If he can pay by PayPal he can transfer the money. PayPal isn't an option, it's too risky given the amount involved. No bank transfer then no car.

not to mention your losses in fee's.when i sold xbox's for large amounts i offered a discount for bank transfers
he may only be paying through paypal as he has no cash and wants to put it on his credit card.
yeah no need to worry, people worry to much ifyou ask me. more chance of being scammed using a dodgy cash point or mugged most likely. the benefit of him paying straight to your bankaccount is that paypal wont take a fee from you for using there serivce. so much percent cant remember exactly what it is now. so you end up with mroe cash that way. as dave said he may be saying paypal so he can usehis card. or just forthe ease. i allwayuse paypal for the ease factor but have given someone bank details also.

Sarah lost a couple hundred pounds when she sold a phone on ebay and got paid via paypal. She had transfered the money from paypal to her account and it had been in a few days before she got an email and calls from paypal demanding the money back. Turns out the payment had been made with a stolen credit card. Paypal offers no protection for sellers, only buyers.
Tread carefully Steve. If he's a genuine buyer he won't mind being flexible to protect you both from fraud.

Yeah, maybe I am worrying too much, but better safe than sorry. The auction did state that cash was the only accepted payment method with a deposit of £50 payable by PayPal to secure the car. So if he didn't have the money he shouldn't have bid.
